The Legend of Savitri and Satyavan: Savitri was the beautiful daughter of King Ashwapati of Madra. She chose Satyavan, the son of the blind, exiled king Dyumatsena, as her husband. Although Sage Narada warned that Satyavan was destined to die within a year, Savitri remained firm in her decision and married him, living a simple life in the forest. Three days before Satyavan's destined day of death, Savitri began a strict three-day fast. On the fateful day, she accompanied Satyavan into the forest to collect wood. While cutting wood, Satyavan became dizzy and lay down with his head in Savitri's lap. Soon, Yamaraj, the Lord of Death, appeared and carried Satyavan's soul toward the south. Savitri followed Yamaraj. Impressed by her devotion and wise words on Dharma, Yamaraj offered her three boons, excluding the life of Satyavan. First, she asked for her father-in-law's eyesight and kingdom to be restored. Second, she asked for one hundred sons for her father. Third, she asked for one hundred sons for herself. Yamaraj granted all three. Savitri then pointed out: 'O Lord, how can I have sons without my husband?' Realizing his own boon's paradox, Yamaraj smiled and released Satyavan's soul, restoring him to life.
