Shri Satyanarayan Vrat Katha (Complete 5 Chapters - Skanda Purana)

Chapter 1: The Context of the Vrat In the sacred forest of Naimisharanya, the great sage Suta Goswami addressed the assembly of eighty-eight thousand holy sages led by Shaunaka. The sages asked: 'O master, please tell us how humanity in the age of Kali-yuga can overcome their miseries, obtain their desires, and achieve liberation with simple efforts.' Suta Goswami smiled and replied: 'O holy ones, a similar question was once asked by the divine sage Narada to Lord Vishnu Himself. The Supreme Lord revealed the Satyanarayan Vrat, declaring that whoever performs this worship with pure devotion on a Purnima (full moon day) or Sankranti will be freed from all financial, physical, and mental distress, gaining happiness in this life and salvation hereafter.' Chapter 2: The Poor Brahmin and the Woodcutter In the ancient city of Kashi, there lived a highly learned but extremely poor Brahmin. He wandered the streets daily begging for food. Lord Vishnu, moved by his plight, assumed the form of an old Brahmin and advised him to perform the Satyanarayan Vrat. The Brahmin vowed to do so, and by the Lord's grace, he obtained wealth and prosperity. During his worship, a poor woodcutter arrived. Fascinated by the ritual, the woodcutter learned its rules and vowed to perform it using the earnings from selling wood. Lord Satyanarayan blessed him with double the price for his wood, and the woodcutter became wealthy and lived happily. Chapter 3: King Ulkamukha and Merchant Sadhu King Ulkamukha was a wise ruler who, along with his queen Bhadrasheela, performed the Satyanarayan Vrat regularly. A wealthy merchant named Sadhu saw them performing the ritual and inquired about its significance. Sadhu vowed to perform the Vrat if he were blessed with a child. Soon, his wife Lilavati gave birth to a beautiful daughter, Kalavati. However, Sadhu postponed the Vrat until his daughter's marriage. Even after Kalavati married a noble merchant from Kanchannagar, Sadhu forgot his promise, incurring the displeasure of Lord Satyanarayan. Chapter 4: The Imprisonment and Redemption of Sadhu Sadhu and his son-in-law traveled to the city of King Chandraketu for trade. Due to their neglect of the vow, they fell into misfortune. A robbery occurred at the royal palace, and the thieves hid the stolen jewels near Sadhu's shop. The royal guards arrested both merchants, confiscating their wealth. Back home, Sadhu's wife and daughter fell into extreme poverty. One day, Kalavati observed the Satyanarayan Vrat at a temple and told her mother. Lilavati immediately performed the Vrat to seek forgiveness. Lord Satyanarayan appeared in King Chandraketu's dream, ordering the release of the innocent merchants. The King freed them, restored their wealth, and sent them home with honor. Chapter 5: The Disrespect of Prasad and Final Salvation On their journey home by boat, Lord Satyanarayan tested Sadhu by appearing as an ascetic and asking about the boat's cargo. Sadhu lied, claiming it contained only dry leaves. Instantly, all his gold turned into leaves. Realizing his arrogance, Sadhu fell at the ascetic's feet and begged for mercy. The Lord restored his wealth. Upon reaching their village, Kalavati rushed to meet her husband, leaving behind the Prasad (sanctified offering). Lord Satyanarayan became angry, and the boat carrying the son-in-law sank. Understanding their mistake, Kalavati returned, ate the Prasad, and prayed. The husband and boat emerged safely. The entire family performed the Vrat regularly and eventually attained the heavenly abode of Vaikuntha.
