The Legend of Queen Veeravati: In ancient times, there lived a wealthy merchant who had seven sons and a beautiful daughter named Veeravati. She was married to a noble king and was deeply loved by her family. During her first Karwa Chauth after marriage, Veeravati visited her parents' home and observed a strict, waterless fast (nirjala) along with her sisters-in-law. As the day progressed, Veeravati grew extremely weak due to hunger and thirst. Her brothers could not bear to see their sister suffer. They built a fire behind a nearby hill, placed a sieve over it, and told Veeravati: 'Sister, look! The moon has risen over the hill. You may now offer prayers and break your fast.' Trusting her brothers, Veeravati offered prayers to the fake moon. As she took her first bite of food, she sneezed—an inausicous sign. With the second bite, she found a hair. Upon taking the third bite, a messenger arrived with the tragic news that her husband, the King, had suddenly passed away. Heartbroken, Veeravati wept inconsolably. Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva appeared before her. The Goddess explained that Veeravati's brothers had deceived her, causing her to break the fast before actual moonrise. Devi Parvati advised her to keep a strict fast for the next twelve months on every Chaturthi and perform the Karwa Chauth Vrat again with complete faith. Veeravati followed the divine instructions, keeping the fasts strictly. Pleased by her devotion, Goddess Parvati restored her husband's life, and they lived a long, blessed life together.
